Rent Affordability Calculator
A quick check on how much rent fits your income, based on the widely used 30% rule. Useful before you start viewing flats in W1 and the surrounding postcodes.
Add a partner or flatmate’s salary if you are renting together.
30% is the standard affordability benchmark. Many London letting agents require your annual income to be at least 30 times the monthly rent, which is the same thing.
Affordable rent
£1,375
per month
£317
per week
How this works. We take your combined gross annual income, apply the percentage you chose, and divide by 12 for a monthly figure and by 52 for a weekly figure. The 30% rule is a guide, not a hard limit. It uses income before tax, so your take-home budget will feel tighter. Central London rents often push people above 30%, so treat anything higher as a stretch and check it against your real take-home pay and other bills.
